Emily B. in Mason by Michelle Mason Dress at So Excessive’s Holiday Event

Thursday evening Emily Bustamante of “Love & Hip Hop.”

Upon entering the boutique I was immediately struck by the luxurious gold damask-patterned walls, cascading chandelier, and opulent decor. It was so glamorous and beautiful, I could have schmoozed and shopped the night away!  I somehow managed to restrain myself and made my way on over to Keena, who I soon learned is a proud Newark-native!  Keena not only sells trendy and unique earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces that she personally hand-picks for the shop, she also offers personalized service to ladies seeking expert advice on how to accessorize.  Keena was just as business-savvy as she was beautiful.  Here are some of the fun pieces that So Excessive carries!

After talking all things “So Excessive” with the owner, I met with Emily to chat about her personal style, her upcoming Emily B. fashion line, and how she feels about the current season of “Love & Hip Hop.”  Emily was curvy and beautiful in the Ankle Boots by DSQUARED2.  Set on a 2.5 inch rubber platform of thin blades, the heel measures 6.5 inches.  A silver and black hand-chain bracelet with silver hoops, smoky eyes, and a pink lip completed Emily’s look.

Of course, I kept it prissy and prim in a chartreuse roll-neck blouse by Willi Smith, white Bebe pencil skirt with sparkly stretch belt from Mandee, and pink J. Crew blazer. I styled the look with my favorite green ankle wrap sandals by Rouge, a pink pearl necklace with matching bracelet, and Pink Friday Lipstick.

Style Me Prissy: So Emily, prior to Love & Hip Hop you were known in the industry as a stylist. How did you get into styling and who are some of your clients besides Fab?

Emily B: Yes, I’ve been a stylist for a while now! I’ve worked with Terrence J. from 106 & Park, Red Cafe, he’s an artist signed to Bad Boy, Teairra Mari, and a host of NFL and basketball players.  And you know, I do a lot of personal shopping. But my passion is really in design though.  So I’ve been working on that.

Style Me Prissy: Oh yes! We are definitely looking forward to the launch of the Emily B. collection.  So I understand that you went to school for fashion design?

Emily B: Yes, I went to school for design. I actually went to a vocational high school for fashion and design.  So I’ve been wanting to do this since I was about 13.  Now I’m finally following my passion!

Style Me Prissy: That’s really exciting, Emily. So what can we expect from the line?  What’s the price range… and what age is it geared towards?

Emily B: I would say that the age range is 18-35.  I’m going to keep it young and fresh and affordable.  That’s my big thing, you know? A lot of young girls are watching the show, and they’re always asking me where I get my clothes from.  So I want to keep my clothes at a neutral price, so everyone can afford it. So that’s my main key focus, to just make sure that it’s affordable, and quality at the same time.

Style Me Prissy: Well speaking of the show, in one episode you wore a yellow with black mesh mini-dress. It was the evening Teairra Mari dragged you to the club.  (smile) Who was that by?

Emily B: (laughs) Actually that day, I had a whole bunch of dresses pulled!  So then all these people are asking who it’s by and I don’t even own it. (laugh) I feel bad! Ooh! Sometimes when I have something big to do, even though I’m a stylist, I’ll get things pulled as well, by my assistant. That was one of those things she had pulled  It was maybe a $200 dress.  It wasn’t even expensive, and I got a big rave review about it.

Style Me Prissy: (laughs) Yeah, a lot of people were looking for that dress, girl! And for the life of me I couldn’t find it. So who are some of your favorite designers?  Who do you love to wear and who has been an inspiration for you in terms of the Emily B. line?

Emily B: Well, as far as designers, I’m not really into names or labels.  I don’t wear clothes based on the designer.  I wear clothes based on the fit and how it looks.  I shop everywhere from Forever 21 to Neiman Marcus, you know? I would say I like edgy stuff. I like edgy and sexy.  So I love, like, Alexander McQueen and lines like that.

Style Me Prissy: Right, right! Love that. So you pretty much wear whatever looks good on you?

Emily B: Yeah, yeah! As long as you know how to accessorize, and slap it on with some good shoes. (laughs) That’s really what it’s all about for me.

Style Me Prissy: So has there been anybody who has been an inspiration to you with the Emily B. line?

Emily B: Yeah, well you know, when I started researching my goals I started researching the golden era, from like the 30s to the 60s.  So my inspiration… my muse is Rita Moreno.  She was a Latin actress in the 30s, 40, and 50s.  She was just beautiful, and she was classic and sexy at the same time.  And I want to mirror that, you know? So my line will definitely be classic, timeless, and sexy.

Style Me Prissy: So tell me, what’s it like for you when you’re watching the show?  I know you guys are still taping… is that weird? Or do you kind of know what to expect?

Emily B: No, I don’t know what to expect!  I’m watching it for the first time with ya’all. So every time I’m watching it I’m like, oh my god, did that happen? Or, when I see other scenes that I wasn’t there… I watch like a viewer. (laughs) It’s a little difficult. But then, it’s been almost two years since we started filming the original season, so I’m kind of getting used to it.  You have to have thick skin.

Style Me Prissy: We’ve seen a new Emily B. this season.  Strong… confident… you’ve got your own life and hobbies and your own things going on, independent of Fab. You’re doing so much! Last season I think people saw your more sensitive side. You allowed yourself to be pretty vulnerable for us then, which I think is also okay – I think many women could relate to that side as well.

Emily B: Yeah, I have so many other sides.  And people will see that this season. Like, a lot of people don’t know but I have a little mouth on me. (laughs) I can be sassy.  So you’ll see more of that. You’ll see! It’s different.

Style Me Prissy: What else can we expect to see from you this year?

Emily B: Well, the Emily B. collection should be out in 2012.  And I’m also working on my non-profit organization.  I’m working with teen mothers.  You know, I was a teen mother myself, and so it’s something that means a lot to me. I want to be a mentor for them. I want them to know that you can be strong, you can do something with your life, you know?  You can come out of that.  Being a teen mother, it’s hard.  It’s taught me so much. It’s whats helped me be the person that I am today.

Emily was so sweet and down-to-earth, I felt like I was chatting with a girlfriend I’ve known for years.  Thank you to Facebook to learn about special offers and fun promotions!
